Christine Short - Editor, Shackles & Cringles

Editor

The main focus of the role of Editor is to create, communicate and distribute news and updates of the various fleets and sailors in the Class using the newsletter "Shackles and Cringles". Soon you will be able to read online issues of Shackles from 1965 and onwards (although not every issue) and the concerns of the Class 50 years ago are still the concerns of the Class today, topics like Negotiations with Builders, Building the Fleet, Advancement of Technology, Class Promotion and the Boatshow. You will enjoy reading the older issues of our newsletter.

Here is a quote from NEWSLETTER January 30, 1968, with regards to allowing Centreboards to be of steel, aluminum and WOOD.

“There is little doubt that the board will not be of significant value if the helmsman does not operate the boat at its peak efficiency or misses an obvious windshift or makes gross errors in tactics, However, keen racing skippers will take these for granted and want the best that is available to give them every advantage allowed.”

My Background

I began sailing as an adult about 14 years ago, joining a community club in Toronto’s Outer Harbour. I have raced keel boats - J24s, Ynglings, J105, but my heart is with the Albacore fleet.

Why the CAA

I joined the CAA executive several years ago and have held various positions on the executive, Training, Editor and Membership. I want to give back to the Class which has given me much pleasure and enjoyment.

Goals

My goals on the CAA are as follows:

  • Create online web versions of “Shackles” available for members
  • Encourage fun, fair and competitive racing
  • Improve the recognition for all competitors
  • Support the development of the Class, and to maintain a high profile for this one-design Class
